We’ve been in our apartment for 6 months now and it’s been super fun to decorate! The space is small which means we’ve had to get creative with storage and the dining room is one room that is lacking that right now. It’s not fully finished but I wanted to show you guys how far we’ve come.
Initially, I wasn’t going to put a rug in this space but with the wood floors and as the weather started getting colder it just looked so bare. Also, as soon as I put this rug down I knew it was a keeper! I just love how much interest the geometric pattern adds to the room and it just made the whole space pop.
It also took a bit of trial and error to find a color mix that worked for the space. Initially, I tried a neutral color palette with muted tones of blue and yellow throughout but something just didn’t feel right. One of the downfalls of this apartment is that it doesn’t get a lot of light so anything I tried that wasn’t white just ended up looking drab because it had no light to bounce off.
So I switched gears and started fresh, keeping Bessie (the colorful cow on the wall) as my only color piece. One of the reasons Bessie works is that she sits directly across the only light source in this space, the patio door, which makes her colors really pop in the daytime. She also brings in some of the living room accent colors and since this is an open space, it really helps merge the color palettes of the two rooms, making the space feel much more cohesive.
As I mentioned earlier, this room is really lacking storage space so I’ll be looking for a cabinet or bar cart to put in the corner soon to house some of our stemware, bottles and other bar accessories. The dining room is also the room you walk into when you come in though the front door which means there is no dedicated entry space to the apartment. Initially, my thought was to create a makeshift entryway where the mirror is but as soon as I put the mirror there, the whole place looked so much bigger and now I am having a hard time letting go! I’m going to sit on that one for a little bit and see how I feel after a while.
